Kineiotaping for Keloid

Nandgaonkar Hemant P. a Mumbai based Occupational Therapist, has achieved remarkable success in preventing regrowth of ear keloids by using Kinesio Taping, rather than traditional pressure methods.
This therapeutic tape is a non-medicinal and highly effective treatment for a range of ailments, sports injuries, muscular complaints, swelling and joint pain in all ages from babies to the elderly.
Kinesio Tape is light, yet supportive, hypoallergenic and waterproof and creates a lifting effect on skin that improves circulation, relieves pain, and depending on its application, relaxes or stimulates muscles.
A keloid is a type of scar characterized by firm, claw-like rubbery lesions and is sometimes accompanied by severe itchiness and pain.  In severe cases, it can affect movement of skin.
A scar is classified as a keloid where there is dense overgrowth of thick fibrous tissue on the scar. A keloid scar can often be caused by an injury, including minor cuts, burns, acne, piercings, surgical cuts, or vaccinations.
Although keloids can be removed with surgery, there is often reoccurrence. Pressure therapy is traditionally given to prevent any more abnormal growth of tissue and usually a cloth clip with screw mechanism or dental material mould with screw mechanism is used. Although this is effective, Nandgaonkar Hemant considered the bulky nature of these devices to be a disadvantage.
A 45 year old lady was referred to Hemant in November 2011 for pressure therapy three weeks after the removal of a left ear keloid.  Instead of the traditional pressure remedies, Dr Hemant used a small amount of Kinesio Taping to apply pressure to the affected area.  The taping method was far more pleasant, comfortable and practical for the patient and much easier to apply.  Four months later there is no sign of any further abnormal growth.
Hemant is considering using Kinesio Taping in all similar cases in the future.
